Professional Adventures

Northrop Grumman - Proposal Writer, Community Relations Director, Public Affairs Manager

My career in business communications began at Northrop Grumman where I worked for 14 years as a proposal writer, community relations director, and manager of the civic and public affairs. During this time, I also taught creative writing at Glendale College through the college's extension program.

Fletcher Challenge Ltd. - Public Relations Executive & Communications Manager

In 1989, my love of cycling led me to New Zealand where I spent two months on a solo bicycle tour. The beauty of this experience made such an impact on me that I decided to live there and made the move the following year. After some months, I successfully "communicated" myself to Fletcher Challenge, a large corporation in Auckland, where I spent the next seven years as manager of corporate communications. I also taught writing and presentation skills training to corporate managers in Fletcher Challenge companies worldwide.

At Northrop Grumman and Fletcher Challenge, I was given many varied opportunities to grow professionally. Today I can offer services to my clients based on a solid base of previous successes.

Shane Communication - Author, Consultant, and Trainer

I returned to the U.S. in 1997 to start my own consulting and training business. Since then, I've been able to use my experience to help my clients meet their communication needs. I'm the author of over 100 articles, 5 "how-to" books, numerous speeches, business publications, websites, and proposals. For samples of my writing style, see my Portfolio .

In addition to writing, I currently teach technical communication for engineers and oral presentation skills for PhD candidates in UCLA's Mechanical & Aerospace and Civil & Environmental Engineering Departments. I also teach business communication courses online through UCLA Extension's Department of Business and Management. I work with many individual companies to design and deliver custom Training Workshops to fit their needs. I am experienced in working with people who speak English as a second language.

My hobby is leading Sierra Club hiking tours in New Zealand and other wild places. In my spare time I write short stories, read, and play the flute.
